Come spesso accade, e non soltanto in fotografia, la fama professionale di Walter Leonardi è legata a doppio filo con uno dei suoi più importanti lavori. Avendo per anni seguito le spedizioni di Thor Heyerdahl, Leonardi ha pubblicato
sulle più prestigiose testate internazionali i suoi reportage realizzati all'isola di Pasqua, in Perù, a Tenerife e tra le pieghe della vita privata di quello che è giustamente considerato come il più importante esploratore-archeologo dei nostri tempi.

Membro attivo delle agenzie Gamma Liaison di New York e Gamma di Parigi, Walter Leonardi è un fotografo a tutto tondo, che sa intuire la storia da raccontare laddove si svolge realmente: tra gli insediamenti degli zingari italiani, tra le quinte della vita di Torino, sul tavolo operatorio dei celeberrimo chirurgo De Bakey, tra le confortevoli pareti domestiche degli attori di Hollywood e delle modelle californiane.

Professionista intraprendente, è riuscito a realizzare l'unica fotografia della dacia di Gorbaciov in Crimea,
pubblicata in tutto il mondo. Altro autentico primato è il suo ampio servizio sull'addestramento dei cosmonauti
sovietici Primo occidentale e primo fotografo ammesso nella "città proibita", di VIadivostok, Leonardi ha condiviso
le esperienze dei superuomini destinati alle missioni Spaziali, compresi i test di sopravvivenza a meno 65 gradi C° oltre il Circolo polare artico.

An enterprising professional, Leonardi succeeded in taking the only photography of Gorbaciov's dacia in Crimea, which was published throughout the world.

Another authentic exclusive was his wide-ranging piece on the training of Soviet cosmonauts. The first westerner and the first photographer to be admitted to the "forbidden city" of Vladivostok, Leonardi has shared the extreme experiences of the "supermen" preparing for space missions, including survival tests at 65 C° degrees below zero, beyond the Artic polar circle.
